Spend enough time reviewing how law firms show up online and a pattern emerges. Different firms, different suburbs, different practice areas, and the same five gaps, over and over. With roughly 94% of Australian searches running through Google, the gaps below are not cosmetic, they sit between your firm and nearly every person looking for help.
None of them are about bad lawyering. Every one of them is invisible from inside the firm, which is exactly why they survive.
Gap One: The Unanswered Questions
The firm’s website describes the firm. Practice areas, the team, contact. What it doesn’t do is answer a single one of the questions potential clients actually type. What happens to the house. How long does settlement take. What does a first appointment cost. The expertise exists in the consultation room and nowhere else, so the searches happen, and someone else’s answer gets found.
Gap Two: The Untended Shopfront
The Google Business Profile was claimed years ago, or never claimed at all. No updates, old photos, unanswered questions, reviews without replies. For “family lawyer” plus a suburb, the map pack is often the first thing a searcher sees, and an untended profile quietly signals an untended firm, fairly or not.
Gap Three: The Faceless Firm
No photos of the actual people. No video of the principal explaining anything. Clients hire a person to walk them through the worst period of their life, and the firm’s entire online presence offers them a logo. Trust needs a face, and the face is nowhere.
Gap Four: The Frozen Clock
The last article is from 2021. The news page announces an office move that happened four years ago. Nothing signals “this firm is alive and current”, and both Google and humans read freshness as a proxy for reliability. A frozen site ranks like one and reads like one.
Gap Five: The Broken Confirmation
The firm’s reputation is real. Referrals flow, reviews are strong. But when a referred client checks online before calling, what they find doesn’t confirm what they were told.
The presence undersells the practice, so the warmest leads leak at the last step. It’s the exact pattern that shapes how I build content for law firms: the online presence has one job above all others, confirming the trust that already exists.
Why Nobody inside The Firm Sees These
Because you never Google yourself the way a stranger does. You know your firm is excellent, so you read your website as a reminder of that excellence. A worried person at 11pm reads it cold, with no context, comparing it against every other tab they have open. The gaps only appear from the outside. That’s the whole reason external eyes find in twenty minutes what insiders miss for years.
Where To Start
Pick the gap that made you wince. There’s usually one. Fix that one first, because the wince is information: it’s the gap you already suspected. Then work through the rest in order of effort. Most firms can close gap two in an afternoon and gap four in a month. Gaps one and three are the compounding ones, and they’re where the real return lives.
Or… get all five checked at once
